About the event
The Old Gaol, a historic edifice, was constructed in the year 1748 under the direction of Richard Grenville Temple, who held the title of Lord Viscount of Cobham. This building, steeped in history, has seen various transformations and expansions over the centuries. Notably, in 1839, the renowned architect Sir George Gilbert Scott, who was born in the nearby village of Gawcott, undertook significant enhancements to the structure. His expansion included the addition of more cells, which were designed to accommodate the growing number of inmates, as well as a dedicated gaoler’s house, providing living quarters for the prison warden and his family.
Throughout its operational years, the Old Gaol became notorious for the harsh conditions endured by its prisoners. Many individuals were confined within its damp and cold walls, forced to inhabit chilling cells that lacked basic amenities such as heating, lighting, and proper toilet facilities.
