The Old White Horse, now a family home and tea room, has a rich history dating back to 1420. Initially a coaching inn, it was first recorded as such in 1624. Also a pub, postal office and stables.

About the event

The Grade II listed inn, the largest among 12 pubs, encompassed 140 acres, offered 30 beds, and had stabling for 50 horses in 1780. The building is adorned with carvings from Toddington Manor, which date back to 1565. Daniel Defoe visited in 1724 and described Hockcliffe as "dismal." In 1745, the inn was restored, with some windows bricked up due to the window tax.


As the world moved into the tumultuous years of World War II, the manor adapted once again, taking on a vital role in supporting the war efforts. During this period, it was utilized for various purposes, including serving as accommodations for soldiers or as a center for community support activities. The building became a hub of activity, with locals coming together to contribute to the war effort, whether through fundraising events, organizing supplies, or providing shelter to those in need.
